What is a Doula?
“The word doula is a Greek word meaning women’s servant. Women have been serving others in childbirth for many centuries and have proven that support from another woman has a positive impact on the labor process. A doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is experiencing labor, or has recently given birth. The doula’s purpose is to help women have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience. Doulas can also be referred to as labor companions, labor support specialists, labor support professionals, birth assistants, or labor assistants. Most often the term doula refers to the birth doula, or labor support companion. However, there are also antepartum doulas and post-partum doulas.” (American Pregnancy Association)
Pregnancy Rituals
Birth is sacred and requires careful attention.
Pregnancy ceremonies date back to the times of our ancestors when all the women in the village would come together to shower the expectant mother with love, blessings, prayer, nourishment and support. I incorporate these into my services to reconnect with the spirit of all the mothers before us.
Sacred Cleansing Ritual
In this serene cleansing ritual, participants gather by a tranquil body of clean water, embodying purity and renewal. They are guided through a process of gently pouring water over their hands or immersing themselves, symbolizing the washing away of negative thoughts and fears related to childbirth. This symbolic act encourages a release of anxiety, fostering a sense of peace and readiness for the birthing process. The ritual is grounded in the belief that water, with its cleansing properties, can refresh the spirit and mind, creating a supportive space for embracing birth with confidence and calm. Participants leave the ritual feeling rejuvenated, with a renewed sense of trust in their natural birthing instincts.
Sacred Manifestation Ritual
In this manifestation ritual, families gather to harness the grounding and absorbing properties of various salts, blending them with essential oils and flowers to create a potent symbol of their hopes and wishes for childbirth. Each salt, chosen for its unique qualities, represents a different aspect of their desires—health, strength, serenity—while the essential oils and flowers add layers of emotional and spiritual significance. Participants take turns articulating their positive thoughts and intentions, infusing the salt mixture with affirmations of joy, confidence, and support for the pregnancy and birth journey. This tactile and olfactory ritual culminates in a shared commitment to maintaining a positive, nurturing environment, symbolically laying a foundation of love and well-being for the arriving child.
